How do I log in to MySciLEARN?

Go to www.myscilearn.com and log in using your email address and the password that you generated after receiving an email from MySciLEARN.  With access to www.myscilearn.com, you can enroll clients and start viewing results.

Where do clients go to start the program?

Clients access the program by going to www.myscilearn.com/learner.

What headsets should I use?

We recommend using over-the-ear, non-noise cancelling, stereo headsets for Fast ForWord. If you don’t have headsets yet, see our recommended headphones. (Please note: ear buds won't work).

What skills does Fast ForWord work on?

Fast ForWord simultaneously targets literacy & cognitive skills using the principles of neuroplasticity:

How do I access results?
  1. Log into www.myscilearn.com
  2. Click the Results tab
  3. Click one of the options available to view the results specific to the category

What is the Student Percent Complete History Report?

This report shows percent complete history results for an individual learner.


What is the Student Weekly Achievement Report?

This report allows you to review a learner's weekly achievement in a Fast ForWord product.


How do I export a report?

Use the Excel button in the Results page header to export the report data in Excel format, which can then be saved to your local computer or sent to a printer.


How do I print a report?

When viewing the reports, use the Print menu in the Results page header to print reports for parents or other interested parties.


How do I email a report?

Use the Email Scheduler in the Results page header to automatically email reports to parents, and others, on a one-time, daily, weekly, or monthly basis. The reports are included as attachments to the email, in PDF format.


What do report status updates & alerts mean?

If you see a status update or alert on one of your reports, open it to view detailed recommendations.


What is a switch flag?

This status indicates that the learner is progressing well and the system will be advancing the student to the next product.


What is a complete flag?

This status indicates that the learner has completed most of the material available in the product & they should progress to the next product or return to a classroom environment that allows them to practice the skills that have been acquired.
 

What is an intervene flag?

This alert indicates that the learner is not progressing as well as desired and may be having difficulty with the exercise instructions or content, or with staying motivated. This client needs your help and needs it as soon as possible! See the section below, which is dedicated to intervention strategies for students who may need extra help. 


What is an adjust flag?

This status indicates that the learner is not progressing as desired in the product. If interventions have not been successful in getting the learner back on track, consider advancing the student to the next product or participate in instructional activities to help the student progress.

How can I help a child who is struggling in an exercise?

One way to keep learners motivated is to know when to help them if they’re struggling. We recommend these steps to keep students engaged and progressing.

  1. Stay Engaged – The most efficient way to recognize a struggling learner is to keep your eye on them while they’re using the software!
  2. Monitor Reports Daily - By reviewing reports daily, you can tell who’s falling behind.
  3. Identify The Problem – Try using Y-adapters and headphones to listen in on student sessions, and then ask learners questions to assess their understanding.  Do they understand the purpose of the exercise? Is the learner getting bogged down by the vocabulary? Are they focused on the task at hand?
  4. Focus on Improving Accuracy - Consistent accuracy is the most important way to progress in Fast ForWord.  Point out the areas on the screen that track accuracy and completion in Fast ForWord.

Should I use rewards?

Using high achievement scores and points to award more concrete rewards—such as prizes or special recognition—has been shown to improve a learner's participation in the exercises, and learners who consistently work on the exercises each week typically gain the most benefit from the product.


What exercises will my clients complete?

It's important to get familiar with the exercises that your clients will be working on so that you can help them if they have any trouble. Here's a quick overview of the exercises you will be seeing based on your learner's ages.

These are just the two most common beginning levels, but there are several other Fast ForWord products!


What are the most challenging exercises?

Learners tend to need the most help with the “sound exercises.”  These are exercises that require the ability to tell the difference between sounds:

Language V2: Sky Gym, Hoop Nut, Moon Ranch
Language to Reading v2: Jumper Gym
Literacy: Space Racer, Galaxy Goal, Spin Master
Literacy Advanced: Sky Rider

In particular, Sky Gym (Language V2) or Space Racer (Literacy) are the most challenging exercises for many learners. What if your client is struggling in one of these exercises? See below for intervention ideas. 
 

My client is not progressing in Sky Gym or Space Racer. What do I do?

Advancement in these exercises are based on the “3 Up - 1 Down” rule.  Under this rule of progression, learners take one step forward every time they get three trials in a row correct.  They take a step back if they miss one trial.  Consistency is the key to success. See below for several tried and true interventions to move your students up in any of the “sound exercises”, or review this document "How to Help Students with Tone Sequencing Exercises" which details each of these interventions in detail.

What is a “Beat the Instructor” challenge?

In this intervention activity, students compete with you to earn more points by being consistently accurate.  On a sheet of paper, put your name on the top of one column and their name on the top of the other column.

  1. Use a y-jack splitter to listen in with the client during the targeted exercise.
  2. When the learner gets three in a row correct, mark down one point for them.
  3. When the learner makes an error, mark one point for yourself.
  4. At the end of the intervention, total the points for each column.
  5. Fill in the net points (number of learner points earned minus the number of instructor points earned).  This number represents the total number of steps forward that the learner has progressed. Consider setting a goal for the number of net points earned; this will help your client strive for even greater consistency and progress more quickly.

What is a “10 in a Row” challenge?

The goal is for a learner to achieve a minimum of 10 correct answers in a row to move up and breakthrough a plateau in their progress!

  1. On a piece of paper, draw several rows.
  2. Use a y-jack splitter to listen in with the learner during the targeted exercise.
  3. In the first row, start recording correct responses by counting to the number 10. 
  4. For example, if the learner got five correct answers in a row and then missed one, end on the number five and then start over on a new row and encourage them to get to 10 without any errors.
  5. At the end of the intervention, total the number of rows where the learner got to 10 or point out the highest scored row. 

What is a “Say It, Touch It, Click It” challenge?

This intervention slows down a struggling learner who may be clicking erratically and helps him/her to focus before selecting a response.  Begin by prompting each step below and then gradually fade the prompt.

1. Re-Label the Arrow Keys

On the keyboard/arrow keys, label the stickers as follows: On the left arrow key, place a sticker with the word "Go" in green. Use the UP arrow key for the up sweep and the DOWN arrow key for the down sweep.

2. Re-Name the Sounds

Teach your learners to call the UP sweep “weep” and the DOWN sweep “woop.”  Next, place a sticker above the UP arrow key and label it “weep.”  Place a sticker below the DOWN arrow key and label it “woop.” The target sounds to sequence might be, for example, UP (weep) followed by DOWN (woop). (Some coaches have also used other sounds – me/jo, bird/frog for the two tones. Use whatever works best for your client.)

3. Teach “Say it, Touch it, Click it.”

After carefully listening to the tones, teach your client to say “weep/woop.”  Then have them say “weep/woop” while touching the stickers labeled “weep” and “woop.”  Finally, have them say “weep/woop” while clicking the correct keys in sequential order (the UP arrow; followed by the DOWN arrow).


What are some interventions for other exercises?

The error reports can be used for the exercises listed below.  They will help you identify the beginning and ending sounds, words, and sentences that a student is missing.  Generally, each exercise requires that the student answer at least 90% of the answers correctly in order to master the current level. 

Please note: the Listening Comprehension component in Stellar Stories, Galaxy Theater, and Cosmic Reader require 100% accuracy.


What exercises use error reports?

Use error reports for the following exercises:

Reading Readiness: All of the exercises except for Inside the Tummy
Reading Products: All exercises
Language V2: Elebot, Robo Dog, Space Commander
Language to Reading v2: Polar Planet, Tomb Trek, Cosmic Reader
Literacy: Star Pics, Stellar Stories
Literacy Advanced: Meteor Ball, Lunar Leap, Galaxy Theater


How do I use Error Reports?

The error reports provide a wealth of information to help you pinpoint areas that a participant needs to work on.  These reports are located on the results tab in mySciLEARN by going to an individual learner’s report.  Below the completion history graph you will find the section on error reports which contains a record of all answers that a learner has missed.  This record is based on the date range.  If a learner has worked for longer than four weeks, you will need to expand the date range to include all days worked if you wish to see all the errors since they started working.  Identify the areas that the learner is missing the most and use this information for individual practice.
