Research has shown the critical need for students to become proficient readers by the end of the third grade. Many states have passed legislation or put programs in place to support this goal, including AZ, CO FL, IA, IN, MN, NC, NM, OH, OK, TN, UT, VA, and WI, and we expect more states to join in making this a prominent education initiative.
According to the Annie E. Casey Foundation report, 6.6 million low-income children in the birth to age 8 group are at increased risk of failing to graduate from high school on time because they won’t be able to meet NAEP’s proficient reading level by the end of third grade.
The Fast ForWord® Program
Because many students lack cognitive learning skills, they have difficulty acquiring reading proficiency. At the same time that the Fast ForWord program develops reading and language skills, it also builds the cognitive skills of memory, attention, processing speed, and sequencing that are necessary for all learning, including reading.
Early elementary students can make significant gains in phonemic awareness, a critical early reading skill, with Fast ForWord Language
In another study, third grade students who used Fast ForWord Reading 2 made significant improvements on reading fluency after Fast ForWord participation and significantly outperformed a comparison group of their peers who did not use the product.
The Reading Assistant™ Program
Once students can comfortably read 25 words per minute, they are ready for Reading Assistant, a program that builds fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. Reading Assistant is the only online reading program that provides real-time feedback as the student reads a selection out loud. And with over 300 leveled reading selections for grades K-12, students can get the additional individual reading practice they need to become better readers.
Students who use the Reading Assistant program have been able to increase their reading level 50% more than students receiving classroom instruction alone.
