Oakland, Calif. - Oct. 12, 2009 - Dr. Michael Merzenich, a co-founder of Scientific Learning Corp. (NASDAQ:SCIL), will be one of 65 honorees recognized today at the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Annual Meeting for their election to the IOM. Election to the IOM is considered one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine, and recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service. The introduction of the class of 2008 IOM members will take place at 11:45 a.m. at the National Academy of Sciences building, located at 2100 C Street, N.W., in Washington, D.C.

A member of the National Academy of Sciences since 1999, Merzenich has been a leading pioneer in brain plasticity research for more than three decades. In 1996, Merzenich was the founding CEO of Scientific Learning Corp. which markets and distributes the Fast ForWord® and Reading AssistantTM family of products, scientifically-proven intervention programs that apply neuroscience principles to build the fundamental cognitive skills required to read and learn.

Merzenich has received many esteemed awards and prizes, such as the Ipsen Prize, Zülch Prize of the Max Planck Institute, and the Thomas Alva Edison Patent Award. He has been granted more than 50 patents for his work and has published more than 200 articles, including many in leading peer-reviewed journals such as Science and Nature. Merzenich is also a professor emeritus at the University of California at San Francisco, and is chief scientific officer of Posit Science, a company he co-founded to deliver clinically proven brain fitness software into the hands of consumers.
