Oakland, Calif. - Oct. 28, 2008 - Dr. Michael Merzenich, co-founder and director of Scientific Learning Corp. (NASDAQ:SCIL), has received one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine by being elected to the Institute of Medicine (IOM). The announcement was made at the IOM's 38th annual meeting held this week in Washington, D.C.
A member of the National Academy of Science since 1999, Merzenich is a leading pioneer in brain plasticity research. In 1996, Merzenich was the founding CEO of Scientific Learning Corp. which markets and distributes the Fast ForWord® and Reading AssistantTM family of products, scientifically-proven intervention programs that apply neuroscience principles to build the fundamental cognitive skills required to read and learn.
Merzenich has received many esteemed awards and prizes (including the Ipsen Prize, Zülch Prize of the Max Planck Institute, and the Thomas Alva Edison Patent Award), more than 50 patents for his work, and published more than 200 articles, including many in leading peer-reviewed journals such as Science and Nature. Merzenich is also chief scientific officer of Posit Science, a company he co-founded to develop computer-based training programs to enhance cognitive abilities of people as they grow older.
