Oakland, Calif. — Aug. 12, 2010 — To gear up for a successful new school year, the Palmyra Area School District in Palmyra, Pa. hosted a summit for local educators to explore the importance of brain fitness in education. During the Brain Summit presented by Scientific Learning (NASDAQ:SCIL), a company founded by neuroscientists from the University of California San Francisco and Rutgers University, educators from nine school districts learned how cutting-edge technology and neuroscience are transforming education — and helping students become successful lifelong learners.

During the one-day event, district superintendents, directors of special education, principals, coaches and teachers learned about the latest research and developments in how the brain learns to read, including why some children experience difficulties and how educators can help students build their skills and become better readers. Attendees also explored strategies for integrating brain fitness into district instructional plans, and how this approach can help meet Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) needs, strengthen Response to Intervention (RtI) programs, and improve instruction by enhancing existing curriculum.

Educators attending the summit also saw a demonstration of the Fast ForWord® family of educational software products, which the Palmyra Area School District implements in kindergarten through 12th grade to help struggling learners improve their reading proficiency. Based on more than 30 years of neuroscience and cognitive research, the Fast ForWord software builds the cognitive skills — memory, attention, processing rate and sequencing — required to read and learn effectively.

The Scientific Learning Brain Summit was held Aug. 5 at Palmyra Area High School.
