Oakland, Calif. - Feb. 18, 2010 - John Corcoran, an educator, author and public speaker who is nationally known for his work to prevent and eradicate illiteracy across America, will discuss the fight against illiteracy with education leaders from the Southeast later this month in Nashville, Tenn. Corcoran's keynote presentation is part of a Brain Summit sponsored by Scientific Learning Corp. (NASDAQ:SCIL), makers of the Fast ForWord® and Reading AssistantTM family of products.
The Scientific Learning Brain Summit will be held Feb. 22 through Feb. 24. During the event, attendees will learn about brain fitness and how it addresses literacy challenges facing school districts today.
Corcoran, who currently serves as president of the nonprofit John Corcoran Foundation, is the author of "The Teacher Who Couldn't Read" and "The Bridge to Literacy." A university graduate with a bachelor's degree in education and business administration, Corcoran was a functional illiterate for almost 50 years. In his presentation, he will discuss how teaching all children how to read using scientifically proven methods of instruction will prevent another generation of failure. He will also explain how increasing resources for programs for older students, dropouts and adult learners will eradicate an epidemic that threatens America's economic and social well-being.
Following Corcoran's presentation, scheduled for Feb. 23 from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m., Sherrelle Walker, chief education officer of Scientific Learning, will lead a two-hour presentation on the importance of brain fitness in education. Walker will demonstrate how schools can increase student achievement by combining good teaching, good content, and exercises that stimulate the brain to build brain fitness and expand learning capacity. Attendees will learn how this approach can help districts meet Adequate Yearly Progress needs, strengthen Response to Intervention (RtI) programs, and improve instruction by enhancing existing curriculum.
