Oakland, Calif. - Jan. 20, 2010 - David Boulton, a learning activist, technologist, author, and public speaker known for his work on the societal and emotional effects of reading related difficulties, will take his message to Texas education leaders at the Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA) Midwinter Conference this month in Austin. Boulton's presentation, "Stewarding the Health of Our Children's Learning," is part of a preconference Brain Summit sponsored by Scientific Learning (NASDAQ:SCIL), makers of the Fast ForWord® and Reading AssistantTM family of products.
The Brain Summit, titled "The New Science of Learning: Brain Fitness in the Classroom," will be held Jan. 24 from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the Austin Convention Center. During the event, attendees will learn about brain fitness and how it addresses literacy challenges facing school districts today.
Drawing on The New Science of Learning public television special and the work of the Children of the Code Project, Boulton's presentation will explore the critical differences between "stewarding healthy learning" and "unwittingly causing unhealthy learning." He will discuss how children can unconsciously learn in ways that retard, diminish, or disable their capacities for ongoing learning. He will then share how educational leaders can help dispel the "mind-shame" caused by the protracted difficulty of learning to read, and offer strategies for guiding healthy learning. Boulton is a co-founder of Learning Stewards, a nonprofit social education organization, and the director of the Children of the Code Project.
Following Boulton's talk, Sherrelle Walker, chief education officer of Scientific Learning, will lead a presentation on the importance of brain fitness in education. She will demonstrate how schools can increase student achievement by combining good teaching, good content, and exercises that stimulate the brain to build brain fitness and expand learning capability. Attendees will learn how this approach can help districts meet Adequate Yearly Progress needs, improve instruction by enhancing existing curriculum, and monitor student progress in reading gains.
