Position Summary

Scientific Learning is seeking a SaaS Systems Engineer to manage the high-availability Internet operations for Scientific LearningThis position is located at our corporate office in Oakland California, with occasional travel to offices and data centers outside of the SF Bay Area.

In this position you will be responsible for supporting Internet-based operations for a unique neuroscience-based educational software product, managing the operational environment, application servers, and network systems.  You will also be a dedicated resource for supporting product, Web, and database development programmers, and act as a backup support for corporate MS Windows Server application systems..

Detailed Responsibilities

  • Hardware and operating system support for Linux application servers, and maintaining Oracle database server systems in a Sun Solaris environment.
  • Provide on-demand support of Engineering and enterprise environments;
  • Document infrastructure environment and processes;
  • Serve as key contributor for infrastructure improvement projects
  • Rollout server/storage equipment to datacenters;
  • Implement and validate failover/failback across datacenters;
  • Enhance service level management using monitoring/notification tools and internal processes;
  • Ensure adherence to industry best practices for software lifecycle management, change control, security and regulatory compliance.
  • Provide performance tuning of supported platforms based on resource utilization, monitoring, and desired results;
  • Management and configuration of DAS/NAS/SAN storage
  • Provide frequent communications to internal customers and management;
  • On-call pager duty

 

Requirements

  • SAN/NAS administration
  • Strong customer service, interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written)
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities.
  • A bachelor's degree in computer science, management information systems or related field (or equivalent experience) required
  • 5-7 years of Linux/Unix systems administration experience
  • Exposure to high-traffic environment (multi-gigabit)
  • Expert knowledge of troubleshooting tools (i.e tcpdump, netstat, iostat, traceroute)
  • Systems administration-level knowledge of: HTTP/Apache, DNS/BIND, SSH, SNMP, NFS, Perl and/or Shell, Puppet, Solarwinds Orion
  • Experience with performance tuning, package installation, patch management updates, network & server management issues
  • Experience managing multisite, large scale server farms required
  • You must have experience supporting complex systems in a 24x7 environment
  • Experience in fast-pace consumer web environment is a big plus
  • Ideal candidate will be able to effectively solve large-scale infrastructure challenges under minimal supervision
  • Understanding of web services and middleware technologies.
  • Expertise with server-side issues such as distributed computing, persistence, security, high scalability, and failover.

 

Additional Desired Skills

  • Experience on Cisco router/switch configurations and troubleshooting
  • Ability to perform complex troubleshooting to isolate, diagnose, and correct network problems
  • Strong knowledge of LAN/WAN environment and experience working with LAN/WAN technologies
  • Extensive hands-on experience deploying Java, J2EE, Tomcat/JBoss, PHP a plus.
  • Knowledge of various network routing protocols: IGRP, RIP, OSPF, BGP
  • Knowledge of MS Windows 2003/2008 Server.
  • Application and Network Security experience
  • Change Control systems and tools (Puppet)
  • Experience in a regulated industry (SOX, HIPAA, FERPA, PCI)
  • Experience working in a follow-the-sun support model.
