This is a regular full-time exempt position reporting to the VP/Customer Operations.
Position Summary
The Director of Sales Engineering is responsible for actively driving and managing the technology evaluation stage of the sales process, working in conjunction with the sales team as the key technical advisor and product advocate. The Director of Sales Engineering leads and manages a team of sales engineers and works closely with Account Managers, Sales Directors, Support, Marketing and Development in this highly-visible, customer-facing role.
Detailed Responsibilities
- Develop role of Sales Engineer and provide structured, high quality training for field technical team on sales engineering role and processes.
- Identify needs for the field technical organization such as training and infrastructure improvements to make the team as effective, efficient, motivated and productive as possible.
- Develop internal certification to assure field technical organization is well trained in technical knowledge and deployment options.
- Assist in development and delivery of technical training sessions to the sales team.
- Work closely with Sales, Development, Support, and Product Management to ensure the successful sale and deployment of technical solutions to customers.
- Communicate and prioritize new features/enhancement requests to Product Management.
- Manage multiple demands with focused resources in an efficient, effective, professional, and reliable manner.
- Work with the Account Managers to develop and recommend technical deployment options to meet the customers' requirements.
- Ability to manage and interpret customer requirements - speaking with clients to understand, anticipate and provide deployment solutions.
- Act as a resource and source of escalation for pre and post sale issues for customers and Account Managers in complex sales.
- Conduct sales engineering presales activities during resource constrained time periods or for particularly high priority accounts to drive sales.
- Create and deliver presentations on our solutions, including advanced product concepts, advanced integration proposals and future direction.
- Maintain a high level of knowledge of all our products and services.
- Prepare responses to RFP's and RFI's as needed.
- Manage multiple demands with focused resources in an efficient, effective, professional, and reliable manner.
- Communicate company and department objectives, strategies, and tactics to all team members.
- Communicate with key customers, partners, and executives on significant issues and accomplishments.
- Embody positive leadership qualities for team members and all employees
Requirements
- Minimum of 5 -7 years of management experience in professional or technical services.
- Significant experience in building teams, organizations, processes.
- Significant experience in identifying, designing and rolling out key pre- and post-sales services.
- Knowledge of networking environments and network evaluation tools.
- Experience in professional or technical services in a software company is preferred.
- Minimum of four years experience managing a sales engineering team.
- Five years of technology experience (in software or development tools) as a Sales Engineer, Software Engineer, Development Manager or Project Manager.
- Previous work in the education environment a plus
- Strong knowledge of Windows, Mac OSX and UNIX platforms.
- Team player with significant leadership skills and a customer-focused attitude.
- Strong work ethic. The ability to get things done in an emerging, high-growth company.
- The ability to travel 50-75% of the time.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Smart, creative, energetic, conscientious, and enthusiastic person with strong problem solving skills.
- Bachelor's Degree (in a scientific or technical discipline preferred).
